If you’re among the many people who have no idea what any of that means, stick around as we explore the history of marbles. Rolling Through History Believe it or not, but no one really knows where marbles originated. They’ve been found in the ashes of Pompeii and in the tombs of ancient Egyptians, and they were played with by Native American tribes, so it’s impossible to pin down a precise country of origin. The earliest examples were simply stones that had been polished smooth by a running river, but for centuries artisans made them by hand from clay, stone, or glass. Mass production became possible in , when Sam Dyke of Akron, Ohio, created a wooden block with six grooves, each of which held a lump of clay. An operator would roll a wooden paddle over all the clay balls at once, with a back-and-forth and slightly lateral motion, creating six marbles. With around employees, Dyke’s factory was cranking out five train carloads, or about one million marbles, every day. Mass production made marbles much cheaper to make, allowing the price to drop from about one penny each to a bag of 30 marbles for the same price.

Architecture of Ancient Rome Roman architecture, even more than the rest of Roman art , reflected the practical character, restless energy and organizational mindset of its creators. As the Roman Empire expanded to engulf not only the Mediterranean region but also large areas of Western Europe, Roman architects struggled to achieve two overriding aims: To this end, they mastered a number of important architectural techniques, including the arch, the dome and the vault, as well as the use of concrete.
GLASS HAND MADE MARBLES. Hand made glass marbles were invented in Lauscha, Germany, in the late s. They were produced until the early part of the twentieth century, when World War I and the invention of marble producing machinery in America effectively ended the hand made marble industry.
The result is 4. Nearly all of this mass is in Haumea. Objects appear bright to Earth observers either because they are large or because they are highly reflective. If their reflectivity albedo can be ascertained, then a rough estimate can be made of their size. For most distant objects, the albedo is unknown, but Haumea is large and bright enough for its thermal emission to be measured, which has given an approximate value for its albedo and thus its size.
The rotational physics of deformable bodies predicts that over as little as a hundred days, a body rotating as rapidly as Haumea will have been distorted into the equilibrium form of a triaxial ellipsoid. It is thought that most of the fluctuation in Haumea’s brightness is caused not by local differences in albedo but by the alternation of the side view and end view as seen from Earth. The rotation and amplitude of Haumea’s light curve were argued to place strong constraints on its composition.
If Haumea were in hydrostatic equilibrium and had a low density like Pluto, with a thick mantle of ice over a small rocky core, its rapid rotation would have elongated it to a greater extent than the fluctuations in its brightness allow. Such considerations constrained its density to a range of 2.

Before his departure to take up the post he had approached officials of the British government to inquire if they would be interested in employing artists to take casts and drawings of the sculptured portions of the Parthenon. According to Lord Elgin, “the answer of the Government Pieces were also removed from the Erechtheion , the Propylaia , and the Temple of Athena Nike , all inside the Acropolis. Parthenon Frieze and Metopes of the Parthenon The Parthenon Marbles acquired by Elgin include some 21 figures from the statuary from the east and west pediments , 15 of an original 92 metope panels depicting battles between the Lapiths and the Centaurs , as well as 75 meters of the Parthenon Frieze which decorated the horizontal course set above the interior architrave of the temple.
As such, they represent more than half of what now remains of the surviving sculptural decoration of the Parthenon. Elgin’s acquisitions also included objects from other buildings on the Athenian Acropolis: Legality of the removal from Athens[ edit ] The Acropolis was at that time an Ottoman military fort, so Elgin required special permission to enter the site, the Parthenon, and the surrounding buildings.
He stated that he had obtained a firman from the Sultan which allowed his artists to access the site, but he was unable to produce the original documentation. However, Elgin presented a document claimed to be an English translation of an Italian copy made at the time. This document is now kept in the British Museum. Vassilis Demetriades, Professor of Turkish Studies at the University of Crete, has argued that “any expert in Ottoman diplomatic language can easily ascertain that the original of the document which has survived was not a firman”.
The report said that the document in the appendix was an accurate translation, in English, of an Ottoman firman dated July In Elgin’s view it amounted to an Ottoman authorisation to remove the marbles. The committee was told that the original document was given to Ottoman officials in Athens in

Richard Dorment The Elgin Marbles will never return to Athens — the British Museum is their rightful home The Greeks should erect a statue of Lord Elgin near the Parthenon to express their nation’s gratitude to him for saving the Marbles. PA By Richard Dorment 4: But if anyone thinks the building is ever going to house anything other than the plaster casts that are on display there now, they are hopelessly out of touch with reality. There is virtually no chance that the director or trustees of the British Museum, now or in the future, will comply with this outlandish demand.
The Greeks know this perfectly well — otherwise, instead of pulling this PR stunt, they would be suing Britain in the European courts.

Known examples include the following figurines: All Paperweight marbles are very rare. The base glass is typically clear, though colored glass examples occur, yet only extremely rarely. These are harder to find than regular paperweight marbles and in fact are among the most valuable of all hand made marbles. Millefiori Paperweight Marble SLAGS Though slags are traditionally thought of as mostly machine made types, most of the earliest “transitional” marbles, that is to say those made partially by hand and partially by machine, as well as some hand made marbles, are slag-types.
Hand Made Slags Hand made slags can either be those drawn off a cane two pontil examples or formed by the single gather method single pontil examples. The latter should not be confused with Transitional Slags, which also have single pontils. Most hand made Slags with two pontils are composed of black or purple glass mixed with white.
Green holds that the parthenon was the room in which the peplos presented to Athena at the Panathenaic Festival was woven by the arrephoroi , a group of four young girls chosen to serve Athena each year. In 5th-century building accounts, the structure is simply called ho naos “the temple”. The architects Iktinos and Callicrates are said to have called the building Hekatompedos “the hundred footer” in their lost treatise on Athenian architecture, and, in the 4th century and later, the building was referred to as the Hekatompedos or the Hekatompedon as well as the Parthenon; the 1st-century-AD writer Plutarch referred to the building as the Hekatompedos Parthenon.
Older Parthenon The first endeavour to build a sanctuary for Athena Parthenos on the site of the present Parthenon was begun shortly after the Battle of Marathon c.

Atop the cliffs, Navajo Sandstone often appears as massive rounded domes and bluffs that are generally white in color. Appearance and provenance[ edit ] Navajo Sandstone frequently occurs as spectacular cliffs, cuestas , domes, and bluffs rising from the desert floor. It can be distinguished from adjacent Jurassic sandstones by its white to light pink color, meter-scale cross-bedding , and distinctive rounded weathering.
The wide range of colors exhibited by the Navajo Sandstone reflect a long history of alteration by groundwater and other subsurface fluids over the last million years. The different colors, except for white, are caused by the presence of varying mixtures and amounts of hematite , goethite , and limonite filling the pore space within the quartz sand comprising the Navajo Sandstone. The iron in these strata originally arrived via the erosion of iron-bearing silicate minerals.

Porcelain is a term used to refer to high-fired white-bodied clays. These clays are extremely pure and therefore can be subjected to very high firing temperatures, resulting in a dense, vitreous, white, and often translucent paste. Porcelain is totally resistant to water absorption, unlike lower-fired ceramics such as earthenwares and whitewares.
China marbles were probably introduced in the s, and perhaps even earlier in the century. As with many types of handmade marbles, they originated in Germany. These dates agree well with archaeological evidence, as Chinas have been recovered from contexts dated between Many Chinas were imported to the states from Germany in the second half of the nineteenth century, but this importation had ended by , coinciding with the rise in the American machine-made marble industry. Chinas can be either glazed or unglazed, and they may also be either painted or plain.
If glazed, the glaze will be under the paint, if present. Chinas with designs under the glaze are modern and are often passed off as old. The “glaze” on modern reproduction Chinas usually consists of an acrylic spray or other fixative substance. In general terms, most unglazed Chinas date to the s and before, while most glazed Chinas date to after Several stages of firing occurred depending on the treatment of the Chinas in terms of glazing and decoration.
